General Duties |

1 Purpose
|

2 Procedure Responsibilities The third engineer shall be responsible to the Chief Engineer and shall undertake duties as allocated by that officer. He may be an employed in watch keeping or day work role, as required by the Chief Engineer. He shall at all times understudy the Second Engineer and be prepared to take over his duties and responsibilities. Operation and Maintenance of Machinery The third engineer is particularly responsible to the Chief Engineer for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance and repair of main machinery and all items of auxiliary machinery, which is the responsibility of the engine department. Any defects in equipment are to be brought immediately to the attention of the Chief Engineer. Administration of the Engine Room Department The third engineer is responsible to the Chief Engineer for the management and supervision of the engine department and for the allocation of responsibility to the other engineers with reference to routine maintenance and operating duties as practised in Marlow Offshore Germany vessels. He must ensure that work is carried out safely and efficiently by the men working under his direction and give every assistance to these men to increase their knowledge and efficiency whilst working under his direction. Familiarity with Control, Piping and Electrical Systems The second engineer must familiarise himself with all control, piping systems and valves and electrical systems, so those in emergencies essential services can be restored quickly and safely. Supervision of Maintenance and Repair Work The third engineer is to ensure that all operations carried out in the engine department are adequately supervised. Emergency Equipment The third engineer is responsible to the Chief Engineer for the efficient operation of all emergency equipment, which must be tested on a weekly basis subject to the constraints of operational conditions. In addition to emergency equipment in the machinery spaces, tests must be included for, but not limited to, emergency diesel alternator, emergency fire pump, lifeboat engines and fire flaps. A record of all such tests must be entered in the Engine LogBook. Electrical Equipment The third engineer is to ensure the efficient operation and maintenance of all electrical equipment, utilising the electrical / electronic experience available on board. Rotation of Duplicated Machinery The third engineer must ensure that, where engine room equipment is duplicated, units are changed over in accordance with the approved planned maintenance system currently in force. Instruction to Junior Staff Subject to the requirements of the Chief Engineer, the third engineer is to give every assistance to junior staff in the advancement of their studies, and to encourage as much as possible the study of technical books and literature appertaining to the examinations for certificates of competency. Safety Requirements The third engineer is to familiarise himself with the Marlow Offshore Germany Health, Safety, and Environmental Policy and must take due care for the health and safety of himself and fellow seafarers. He is to co-operate in maintaining an environment which is safe and without risk to health and must follow the recommendations contained in the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen. He must become fully conversant with the methods of use of all safety equipment and emergency procedures. In addition, he must co-operate with the ship's safety officer in the promotion of safety throughout the engineering function.
